Sports Skills and their Importance in the Rehabilitation of People with Disabilities

(A field study in the city of Baghdad)

Abstract

The sport of the disabled is one of the important practices that work to increase the general awareness of the handicapped and provide it with knowledge aspects and the development of mental abilities. From this standpoint, our current research came to identify sports skills and their importance in rehabilitating people with disabilities.

With several objectives, including identifying the types of sports activities practiced by people with disabilities and the most important classifications of disability. The study reached a set of results, including.

1- Our field study contributed to the fact that most of the respondents affirmed that sports activities contributed to increasing social interaction and constructive cooperation in situations of playing with others, as the percentage reached (84%) through their answer (yes).

2- Our field study indicates that sports activities have contributed to employing excess energy in a positive way in their lives, with a rate of (92%).

3- Our field studies show that most of the respondents participate in sports festivals at a rate of (90%), and this indicates the role of the administration of institutes for people with special needs in encouraging sports participation in festivals and sports forums and their obtaining gold or bronze medals, as in the bell game played by students (Al-Noor Institute for the blind).

The most important recommendations of the study are:

1- Emphasizing the role of the administration of schools or institutes on sports participation through coordination and cooperation among them to establish these activities while providing the necessary requirements for the success of sports for this category.

2- Encouraging the winning students by giving them material and moral prizes through festivals because of their positive impact on the psyche of the disabled.

3- Activating the role of the media in spreading sports activities for the disabled by broadcasting them on audio-visual satellite channels, newspapers and magazines, and advertising them extensively.
